How to send a large video file

To send a large video file, send the original as a link — don't attach it to an email and don't push it through a chat app. Email stops at 20–25 MB, which is less than a minute of phone footage, and messaging apps shrink the video by re-encoding it. A link to a direct, end-to-end encrypted transfer moves the exact file, from an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer, and leaves no copy on a server. The steps for each device are below.

How big your video actually is

The size depends on resolution, frame rate and format. These are the per-minute figures Apple gives for iPhone video; Android phones land in the same range.

The conclusion does not depend on the exact numbers: email is never an option for video. Fifteen seconds of 4K is already past the limit.

What SaferDrop can carry, plainly

• Free plan: up to 100 MB per transfer. That is about a minute and a half of 1080p, or roughly half a minute of 4K. Fine for a short clip.
• Pro plan: up to 2 GB per transfer. Around ten minutes of 4K at 30 fps in High Efficiency format, or five at 60 fps.

Phone video passes 100 MB quickly, so if you send footage regularly, it is the Pro plan you will need — we would rather say so here than let you find out on the send screen. From an iPhone

• To a Mac, iPad or iPhone nearby: use AirDrop. It moves the original file untouched, and nothing beats it in the same room.
• To anyone else: in Photos, tap Share → Save to Files. Picking the clip from Files rather than from the photo library avoids it being converted to a more compatible, often larger or re-encoded, copy on the way out. Then open saferdrop.com/send in Safari, choose the file, and send the link and the PIN.
• Keep Safari in front with the screen on until the transfer finishes. The file streams live from your phone, and iOS pauses background tabs.

If the recipient is on Windows, iPhone video recorded in High Efficiency format is HEVC, which some Windows players need an extra codec to open. Switching the camera to Most Compatible before filming avoids it, at the price of a bigger file.

From an Android phone

• To an Android phone or a Windows PC nearby: Quick Share sends the original over a direct local connection.
• To anyone else: open saferdrop.com/send in Chrome, pick the video from your files or gallery, and send the link and the PIN by two different channels.
• Keep the screen on and Chrome in front until it completes, for the same reason as on an iPhone.
• If it has to be WhatsApp: attach the clip as a document, not as a video. That skips the re-encoding, though the file is then uploaded to WhatsApp's servers.

From a computer

A computer is the most comfortable place to send a big video from: a stable connection, no screen to keep awake, and the file is already on disk.

1. Open SaferDrop and add the video. It is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before a byte leaves your machine.
2. Send the link one way, the PIN another. The decryption key lives in the link's fragment and never reaches a server.
3. Keep the tab open. On Chrome and Edge the file streams straight to the recipient's disk, so a large video does not have to fit in their memory.
4. Use a wired connection if you can. Video is where a marginal Wi-Fi signal turns a transfer into a retry.

Both of you need to be online at the same time — there is no stored copy waiting to be fetched later — and the link expires within an hour. The mechanics, and when that trade-off is the wrong one, are in sending large files without uploading.

What chat apps do to your video

Send a video through WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram or Telegram's default path and it is re-encoded before it leaves your phone — lower bitrate, often lower resolution. The transfer is fast because the file is now a fraction of its original size. That is the trade being made on your behalf.

It is irreversible. If you deleted the source, the compressed copy is now your master. For a clip sent to a friend, fine. For footage a client will edit, grade or publish, it is a real loss.

Compress, or send the original?

• They only need to watch it — a review, an approval, a proof. Export a compressed preview; H.264 at a moderate bitrate is small and looks fine on a laptop.
• They will work from it — edit, colour, cut, publish. Send the original. Every generation of re-encoding compounds.
• You are archiving or handing over — send the original, and keep your own copy until they confirm receipt.
